“How do you stay out all night?” As an aging night-lifer and sleep-deprived parent, a Disco Nap is my ace up the sleeve. A quick hour of Z-catching before going out is enough to recharge the batteries so that I can be alert and focused all night when performing.
This special DJ mix is my Ode to the invaluable Disco Nap. It starts in a groovy balearic mood and descends into more weary yet blissful tones as the dubbed-induced hypnotic tempo soothes and tames the chatty mind to get ready for sleepytime. To illustrate the journey of winding down I drew inspiration from the trance-like state that super dubbed out and almost-familiar vocals can deliver.
Halfway through the mix you finally land in sleepland as the beat fades away and your mind glides along with dreamy synths and enters recharge mode. I often listen to music when I go into a Disco Nap and one of the characteriscs that I’ve always found intriguing is how the mind will weave in audio elements nearby into your dream state. Your mind will often interpret those new variables into your dream. Vocals on a track do this best as they have both literal and musical aspects to them. I wanted to capture this intersection of sleep and reality with a priceless acapella from Womack & Womack to usher in Act 3: The Revival. It’s slow going for the first few moments after awakening, but your approach to life is now changed as you look on your future with a new sense of excitement and wonder. This is the ‘Disco’ in Disco Naps. The mix closes out with some Disco Edit heat, just the boost you need before going on another adventure.
